Cashew, fruit
The true fruit of the cashew tree, consisting of a thin exocarp, a spongy mesocarp, and a hard endocarp that protects the seed (commonly known as "cashew nut"). The spongy pulp contains a toxic oily resin called urushiol, which causes allergic dermatitis when touched. To describe the accessory fruit known as "cashew apple" (which is not a fruit but an enlarged flower peduncle), use the "cashew apple" term.
